POSTING: YOUTH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WORKER (TERM)
Purpose:
The Youth Community Development Worker will work within an integrated service delivery model for children, youth and family services in White Rock and South Surrey. Peace Arch Community Services (PACS) and the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) are other participants within this integrated model. The Youth Community Development Worker will work with youth, service providers who work with youth and other supportive adults to carry out community development and education initiatives in White Rock and South Surrey aimed at developing community capacity to support youth, developing youth-friendly attitudes in the community and promoting youth asset-building. The incumbent will also provide additional one-to-one support and mentoring for referred youth at-risk.
Responsibilities:
The position has the following responsibilities:
1. Provide support for the development and ongoing work of a local youth action network comprised of youth, youth service providers and supportive adults.
2. Work with youth to plan, deliver and evaluate community education and awareness initiatives aimed at increasing community engagement in supporting youth, specifically by supporting youth programs and initiatives (e.g. mentor volunteers, financial support, etc.)
3. Plan, deliver and evaluate peer and leadership training programs for youth both on site at Camp Alexandra and off-site.
4. Support youth participants in their work to plan, evaluate and carry out initiatives that build a youth-friendly community, including recruiting, screening, training and supervising youth community development activity workers.
5. Carry out effective intake, screening and assessment for youth clients, receive and make referrals, provide one-to-one counseling, mentoring, support and individualized education /coaching (e.g. anger management, life skills, etc.) for referred youth. (This work will normally be in addition to regular youth community development responsibilities and is for referred youth only.)
6. Participate in integrated case management consultations (for one-to-one work) under the supervision of his/her supervisor.
7. Monitor program budgets in conjunction with supervisor and assist in analyzing/addressing variances.
8. Comply with all relevant service standards, reporting and record-keeping requirements.
Qualifications:
· College/university diploma in a relevant discipline (e.g. child and youth care, recreation, social work, community development, etc.), or equivalent education and experience
· Knowledge and skills in program development and implementation, youth development, peer training and group facilitation with youth, public/community education and relations, intake and assessment, and providing one-to-one support, counseling and mentoring for youth.
· Demonstrated understanding of and experience working within a community development model, especially with youth.
· Experience working with other service providers in an integrated service model or ability to work within such a model
· At least 3 years’ experience working with diverse youth, including “at-risk” youth
· Demonstrated ability to comply with policies and procedures regarding confidentiality, privacy, reporting and record keeping.
· Broad knowledge of community resources available for youth and their families and best practices for provision of youth services
· First Aid certificate (Level 1 Occupational First Aid)
· Personal vehicle for business use, including some client transportation (mileage paid)
· Class IV driver’s license
· Clean Criminal record check
· Good computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook Express.
Desired (but not required) qualifications:
· Knowledge of community resources for children and families in White Rock and South Surrey and working relationships with other service providers
· Second language abilities

- Real enjoyment of work with youth, the ability to act as a positive role model for them and to develop positive relationships with them
- Willingness and ability to work independently and as a member of a team, including a team that includes service providers from other agencies
- Leadership skills and ability to provide leadership for a team of youth and adults
- Creativity, initiative, flexibility and a sense of humor
- Ability to maintain an unbiased attitude towards clients/participants and their situations
- Appropriate personal and professional boundaries and commitment to ethical service standards
- Ability to respect and work with a diverse range of employees, clients and community members including youth and families of all races, all religions, all cultures, all sexual orientations, all abilities and all economic levels.
Terms and Salary: This position is a part-time (minimum 17.5 hrs per week) term position: mid September 12, 2005 - June 30, 2006. Evening work and weekend work will be required. Hours for one-to-one work may be over and above 17.5 hours per week, depending on demand. However, these additional hours cannot be guaranteed.
Salary: This position is placed on Band 5 of the Association of Neighbourhood Houses salary grid ($14.89 - $16.81 per hour, depending on qualifications.)
